NOT TOO LONG AGO, I WAS READY TO GIVE UP. I'M SO GLAD I DIDN’T!
I can’t remember the exact moment things changed for the worse, but I know it started in high school. First, I couldn’t sleep and then came the sadness. Nothing happened, nothing I could put my finger on anyway, I just had a sadness I couldn’t kick.
As I got into my 20’s it got worse. I was first diagnosed with insomnia, then depression, then anxiety, and finally bipolar. Every one of these diagnoses came with a prescription, often more than one.
And then came the pills to help with the side effects of the other pills.
As time went on, I got more depressed, more anxious, slept less and less, and then the weight gain began.
After 20+ years on this rollercoaster of medication, the ups and downs of my mood, and the continual weight gain, I was done, I couldn’t take it anymore. It was at this point my doctor wrote me a prescription and she said that was all she had for me. If that didn’t work, we were talking shock therapy and inpatient treatment.
Nope, I wasn’t interested in either of these options!
It was shortly after this that everything changed. I stumbled on an article talking about the keto diet and that it was the go-to treatment for epilepsy for years before big pharma came out with a pill. This piqued my interest because all the mood stabilizers I had been taking for years were also used to treat epilepsy. I made a giant leap in my mind, maybe if the pills worked for me, the diet might as well.
With nothing to lose, I jumped in and I’ve never looked back.
Within 3 months I was off 5 medications, I lost over 30 pounds, and my entire outlook on life changed. All from changing my diet!
I just kept thinking, how come no one ever told me this? Everyone needs to know! And this is when I went back to school so I’d have some street cred, and it’s 100% why I do what I do!
Now that I know what I know, I understand that it was an inappropriate diet, an unhealthy gut, and unbalanced blood sugar that was the cause of all of my symptoms. All of them! To this day, it still blows my mind!
I BELIEVE WE NEED TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HEALTHY.
I believe it is normal to feel good and energetic, even after the age of 40. We have been conditioned to believe that it’s “normal” not to feel good, and disease is inevitable and out of our control. This could not be more wrong and we all deserve a heck of a lot better!
I have a passion for busting the myths that the food and healthcare industries have pushed on us for decades. They have convinced us all that the calorie is king, all foods in moderation are ok, and weight gain is our fault because we lack willpower. They are peddling poison and we are paying for it with our health and quality of life.
I believe that we have a great deal of power over our health. We are not victims of our genes! Through dietary and lifestyle choices we have an incredible influence on how we feel today and in the future. Genetics may load the gun but lifestyle pulls the trigger. Let’s make sure that trigger is never pulled!
